Haryana, Rajasthan sign MoU to implement 1994 Upper Yamuna water-sharing pact

New Delhi, India

Haryana and Rajasthan have signed an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi, aimed at effectively implementing the Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement signed in 1994. This meeting was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in which both the states agreed to streamline the management and sharing of water resources of Yamuna River.

This MoU is being considered as a major step towards resolving the long pending disputes and issues related to fair distribution of water resources. This 1994 water sharing agreement based on the Yamuna River, which was never fully implemented earlier, has now been revived. This will help in proper management of water supply to both the states of Haryana and Rajasthan. Under this agreement, which is beneficial for all parties, not only fair sharing of river water will be ensured but also a strong framework will be established to avoid any dispute situation in future. Amit Shah said that this initiative will play an important role in promoting cooperation among the states and strengthening water security.

Officials present on the occasion said that shared management of water resources will provide dynamism to the states in their development plans and improve the availability of essential water for agriculture, drinking water supply and industry. In this era of water crisis, it will be a positive example of how cooperation among states can conserve and wisely utilize natural resources.

This MoU, with special focus on equitable use of Yamuna River and environmental protection of the river, can prove to be a model for resolution of water disputes in the country. Various technical committees and working groups will be constituted for the implementation of this scheme in the coming months, which will monitor the effective implementation of this scheme.
