The price tag on having fun: Why do hobbies feel more expensive than ever?

New Delhi, India – In the present times, the number of people pursuing their hobby has increased, but it is also true that the cost of pursuing this hobby has also increased manifold. People who take up new activities in their free time to find enjoyment are now having to bear greater costs than ever before. Experts believe that rising inflation, increase in material prices and increasing demand for technical equipment are the main reasons behind this.

Hobbies, which earlier were just a means of getting pleasure, now sometimes take the form of serious investment. Many activities like photography, music, yoga, painting etc require expensive equipment and materials to get started. For example, those who are fond of photography have to buy a good quality camera which can cost up to lakhs of rupees. Apart from this, lenses, software and other accessories have to be purchased from time to time.

According to financial advisors, spending on hobbies should be balanced and kept within the budget of the individual. This not only maintains economic stability but also maintains mental satisfaction.

Economic experts also said that expensiveness of a hobby can sometimes be a sign of quality related changes, but it does not necessarily mean that expensive means better. With proper research and correct information, appropriate resources can be selected for hobbies. However, due to rising inflation, many people are being forced to give up or limit their hobbies, which can also affect mental health. Therefore, the role of social organizations and government schemes is becoming important to make hobbies more accessible.

There is now a growing understanding in the society that healthy entertainment and hobbies are helpful in reducing mental stress and making life enjoyable. For this, there is a need for joint efforts between the government and the private sector so that hobbies are cheap and easily available to everyone.
