Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is facing severe criticism within the party due to his comments regarding Kashmir. Tharoor recently praised the progress of normalcy in Kashmir and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance towards civil naval security, after which some party leaders have raised questions on his role. Shashi Tharoor had said that the situation in Kashmir is gradually becoming normal and PM Modi’s sensitivity towards civil naval security is commendable. These statements received negative reactions at various levels within the Congress. Some leaders argued that Tharoor’s thinking did not match the ground reality, while some described his statement as being different from the party line.
A senior Congress leader sarcastically said that the way Tharoor interpreted Modi’s statement raises questions on his understanding. He further said that there is concern in the party that Tharoor is not connected with the party members and the common people of Kashmir and his statements may affect the party’s image. At the same time, Shashi Tharoor defended his comments saying that his words are based on several published reports and facts. He also made it clear that his priority is the safety and concern of Indian citizens. Tharoor believes that it is important to maintain dialogue and maintain a positive approach, especially on such a sensitive issue.
The issue remains challenging for the Congress both emotionally and politically as the party needs to take a consistent and clear stand on Kashmir. In the past too, differences have been seen among many big leaders of the party on this issue, and this controversy is once again refreshing the same cry.
Experts believe that Congress will have to make a joint and strong strategy by incorporating diverse ideas within itself so that it can influence its traditional vote bank as well as new voters. Only the party’s precise and effective policy on a sensitive issue like Kashmir will be able to help it face future challenges.
