Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Under Jal Jeevan Mission in the state, the coverage of water supply in rural areas has reached almost 90 percent. So far, more than 1.2 crore rural households have been given tap connections, which is a major step towards achieving the goal of ‘Har Ghar Jal’. This remarkable progress is being possible due to multi-village water supply schemes and active role of local water committees.
Government of Uttar Pradesh has made extensive efforts to address the problem of drinking water by giving priority to this mission. Especially in rural areas where water scarcity has been a major challenge for centuries, safe and clean drinking water is now becoming available. This has not only reduced water-borne diseases but also significantly reduced the time and physical labor that women and girls spend in fetching water.
Under Jal Jeevan Mission, several multi-village water supply schemes have been successfully implemented, thereby expanding the scope of water delivery. Water committees formed at the local level are overseeing these schemes, ensuring that all rural households have regular and smooth supply of water. These committees have identified local needs and water sources and managed them better.
According to the government, steps are being taken towards a better standard of living through the scheme. This model is being considered inspirational not only for Uttar Pradesh but also for other states. The main objectives of this scheme are to improve the quality of life of rural people, increase health awareness and promote social equality.
The work done so far under the Jal Jeevan Mission has brought about a significant change in the direction of water security in the state. In future, continuous efforts will be made to further expand this mission so that it becomes possible to provide clean, safe and adequate water to every rural household. The role of both the government and the local community has been important for this success.
